Clinical Consultation

Psychodynamic consultation, case groups, and organizational support for clinicians

California Woodland Institute offers clinical consultation for therapists, associates, supervisors, group practices, clinics, and training organizations seeking a thoughtful space to think about clinical work.

Our consultation offerings are grounded in relational psychoanalysis, psychodynamic psychotherapy, ecopsychology, crisis work, and attention to the emotional field of clinical practice. We are interested not only in what is happening in the case, but in what the case is stirring in the clinician: countertransference, uncertainty, avoidance, enactment, institutional pressure, and the strange places where our best formulations begin to wobble.

Consultation at CWI is not about performing expertise or arriving too quickly at certainty. It is a place to think carefully, speak honestly, and stay close to the complexity of clinical life.

Consultation

Individual Clinical Consultation

For licensed and pre-licensed post-graduate clinicians who want a consistent, focused space to bring clinical material. We work with what is presenting in the case and what the case is stirring in you: countertransference, the relational field, patterns that keep recurring, and places where the work has become stuck, overly certain, or strangely slippery.

Crisis Consultation & Organizational Support

CWI offers consultation, training, and organizational support for group practices, clinics, and training sites navigating suicidal crisis, psychosis, mandated reporting, high-risk clinical situations, and the emotional aftermath of crisis work.

This may include case consultation, retainer-based support, organizational debriefs, and trainings for clinical teams.

Consultation Groups

CWI offers small consultation groups for clinicians interested in psychodynamic thinking, case discussion, countertransference, and shared clinical inquiry.

Groups may include brief readings, case material, and collaborative discussion. The emphasis is not on technique or protocol, but on developing the clinician’s capacity to think, feel, symbolize, and remain open in the presence of difficult clinical material.

Clinical Supervision for Organizations

For agencies, clinics, and training sites with associate therapists, CWI offers psychodynamically informed clinical supervision and consultation with attention to both case material and the institutional dynamics that shape clinical work.

Available formats may include individual, triadic, and group supervision by arrangement.

Negative Capability

Negative Capability is a small consultation and reading group for clinicians who want to think together without pressure to perform expertise or rush toward consensus.

The group combines shared readings with open case consultation, attending to relational dynamics, unconscious process, countertransference, and the emotional field of the work. Readings may draw from psychoanalysis, philosophy, literature, and contemporary critical theory.
